The Brooklyn South Side

IMG_2091.jpg

The history of the South Side is dicey. As Christian tells it, the drink was brought to the Atherton family when his dad went to play at a golf course where the South Side was the course’s signature drink. I like to think that his dad, Kent, and his girlfriend, Katy, invented it -- that’s the story in my heart at least. The South Side is similar to a margarita in that it is tart and refreshing, but more unique with the hint of mint and your choice of alcohol (I opt for vodka, but rum makes it a little more tropical, and gin is a twisted delight).

I’ve never made a South Side for someone and heard that they didn’t like it, and if you come over to our place at any point - especially in the summer - you will likely be served a South Side and hooked on them.

Ingredients

2 shots vodka

1/2 shot lime

1/2 shot lemon

1 shot simple syrup (less if you prefer a more tart drink)

Bruised mint to garnish

Instructions

In a shaker, combine ice, vodka, lime juice, lemon juice, and simple syrup and shake aggressively. Bruise mint by slapping it. Pour into glass, top with mint, and thank me when you are hooked on South Sides!
