Moving Through Seasons with lululemon
“Fall reminds us how beautiful it is to change”
I think that I’ve always loved fall because it represents my personal new year. After a summer of so much light and adventure, it brings out the homebody in me and challenges me to cherish what I have within arms reach. My routines transition -- creativity on Fridays, baking on Sundays, and a hard rule of no wasted energy on those who aren’t absolutely essential.
And speaking of essentials. What is essential anymore, after this year? What comes to mind when you hear “essential”?
I inaugurated fall this year with a deep clean over the course of a week - of my summer wardrobe, abandoned corners of my apartment, of energies that aren’t serving me anymore. I minimized my things to only what I truly love. It’s a work in progress, but in progress nonetheless. As I settle into my late twenties, I think that I gravitate toward what my mom tried to teach me the last 27 years - to collect only pieces that will continue to overwhelm me with joy 20, 30, 50 years from now.
It’s a way of living that I started implementing early on with my health. Both my parents were athletes when I was growing up, and they are both wildly creative in their own respects. My mom would punish us growing up by forcing us on 6am runs with her through our New York City neighborhood. I’m pretty sure that it was more for her to have company on her runs than it was to teach us a lesson, but I digress. I learned the importance of balancing the bad with the good, particularly as it pertains to my mental and physical health at an early -- possibly TOO early -- of an age. But it stuck with me, and as I grow wiser, I learn to apply that theory to so many other areas of my life.
Autumn also marks the beginning of outerwear, which is arguably the most exciting part of fall fashion. The past few weeks have been juggling between autumn and winter - 60º one day, 30º the next, which is when I understand just how essential it is to have a diverse few pieces of outerwear to reach for as the temperature fluctuates. My fitness routine has migrated from walks throughout Brooklyn back to pilates in my living room, though I will still jump at the opportunity for a long morning walk on those 60º days.
As a part of my parsing-down process, I, after many years of hoarding outerwear, went through my jackets and coats and donated several that have been with me for years to families in need, and replaced them with a couple that will feel more timeless, more functional, and more on brand with my evolving style for years to come. lululemon has been my go-to for all things active and leisurely for over 10 years now, but it wasn’t until last year that I experienced their outerwear for the first time with my introduction being last season’s Cloudscape Waterproof puffer and truly fell in love.
This season I wanted to double down on puffers as the one from last season is perfect for those February and March frigid New York days, but a bit warm for the bipolar December weather we’re currently amidst. I opted for the lululemon Wunder Puff Cropped which is the ideal weight for throwing on over Sweat Intention Onesie (another activewear addition of this year that I can’t get enough of) or with jeans and boots when heading out for the last bit of outdoor dining. The jacket feels like your favorite down comforter that you want to hibernate in all winter, but truly makes going out into the colder weather enjoyable.
As the weather has been changing, I have been able to convince Christian to go on morning walks with Beau and me to loop down through DUMBO and up through Brooklyn Heights a few times each week to start our day active and appreciative of the changes occurring outside our window. There is nothing quite like the 7am fog that rises with the sun and hovers over the East River and cuts off the top half of the skyline. I’ve realized this year especially how different the lenses through which we see the environments around us change with weather and the seasons.
For our morning walks, I added the lululemon Always There Trench in the Frontier color, which is the perfect structured coat belted with unique, industrial-inspired hardware to accentuate my curves and tighten for a warmer belted look. I’ve always loved the way that trench coats travel through decades with small stylistic changes like lapels and button placement, staying timeless and true to their function. The material of the Always There Trench protects from the early morning dew to the afternoon showers, and all of the unexpected weather in between.
If there’s anything I’m taking with me from this year, it’s the ability to adapt and change with whatever is thrown my way, through the essentialist lens that when we spend our resources - time, money, energy - on things that carry us through years and years without needing to be replaced, we feel more stable in the volatility of the things that are out of our control.
